Itahar Rajbari (Bhupalpur / Durgapur Rajbari)

Itahar Rajbari, popularly known as Bhupalpur Rajbari or Durgapur Rajbari, is a historic zamindar palace located at Durgapur village in the Itahar area of Uttar Dinajpur district, West Bengal. It is regarded as an important heritage landmark of the region and is also listed among the places of historical interest in Uttar Dinajpur.

The magnificent two-storeyed mansion is associated with the Roy Choudhury zamindar family, particularly Bhupal Chandra Roy Choudhury. Historical accounts indicate that the family shifted to Durgapur after their earlier residence at Churaman was affected by erosion of the Mahananda River. The present palace subsequently became the centre of their zamindari establishment.

The Rajbari is notable for its large rooms, high ceilings, traditional architectural features, spacious doors and windows, and decorative elements, reflecting the grandeur of Bengal’s zamindari period. Local accounts mention around forty rooms in the building. The palace was also an important centre of social and cultural activities in the locality.

The Rajbari is particularly famous for its traditional Durga Puja, which continues to preserve many of the family’s age-old customs and rituals. The annual celebration remains an important part of the cultural heritage of Durgapur and surrounding areas.

Today, Bhupalpur/Durgapur Rajbari stands as a significant reminder of the region’s zamindari history, architecture, religious traditions and socio-cultural heritage, making it an important historical attraction of Uttar Dinajpur.
